Family Photo Ideas For Kids

One of the greatest challenges that parents face during family photos is how to entertain their kids. Lucky for you, I have been a Gatlinburg photographer for over a decade, which means I have quite a few family photos ideas for kids that are sure to entertain and bring out beautiful candid smiles. Let’s dive into a few simple things you can do to have more fun with your kids for your next session!

Expectations

We are going to start off strong with your expectations. Although you may want a portrait of your entire family smiling at the camera, and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen, sometimes it just doesn’t happen. Especially with younger children, it can be so difficult to get posed pictures. Instead, I suggest that my clients adjust their expectations and embrace candid family photos. With little children this is the best way to get big natural smiles and walk away with a good experience.

Play Their Way

The best way to come up with family photo ideas for kids is to focus on the children and how they like to play! Some children just want to explore the wilderness and walk on a trail. While others really enjoy being tossed around by their parents.

For this session, the family had a blanket that we used to sit on, as well as to swing the kids in. This was so much fun for the boys and looked really great in pictures! We also used a bubble machine, which both entertained and created a whimsical feel to the session.

Bribes & Treats

All kids are different, and if your child needs a bribe or treat to get through family photos, that is okay! This is something that I always ask on my questionnaire so that I can be sure to support mom and dad in their efforts. Whether it is bringing a favorite toy to play with, offering lollipops and candies, or going out for a treat after the session. There is no shame in doing what it takes to keep the kids happy and smiling in pictures!

Embrace The Moment

The best piece of advice I can give for family photo ideas for kids is to simply embrace the moment. These images are more than that; they are memories. When you look back at these photos, you will want to remember how silly and fun your kids are. To be able to feel the joy and love you have in those moments. This is why I love my work as a Gatlinburg photographer. I get to preserve the most precious times in your life!
