Sunrise vs. Sunset Elopements in the Smokies

Choosing between a sunrise and sunset ceremony is one of the first decisions you'll make when planning your Smoky Mountain elopement. While it might seem like a small detail, the time of day you say "I do" can completely shape your experience.

When I'm helping couples plan their elopement, I always ask the same question: "What do you want your wedding day to feel like?" The answer usually makes choosing between sunrise and sunset much easier. Neither is better than the other, they simply offer two very different experiences.

Here's what to consider before making your decision.

Why I Love Sunrise Elopements

I'll admit it, I have a soft spot for sunrise ceremonies. There's something incredibly peaceful about starting your wedding day before the rest of the world wakes up. The roads are quieter, the overlooks are less crowded, and the mountains often feel like they're all yours.

If privacy is one of your biggest priorities, sunrise is hard to beat.

Pros of a Sunrise Elopement

  • Fewer crowds at popular locations

  • Cooler temperatures, especially during the summer

  • Soft, beautiful morning light

  • Better chance of spotting wildlife

  • A relaxed start to your wedding day

If you feel apprehensive because of the time, remember that an early wake-up call is temporary, but the experience is something you'll remember forever.

Things to Consider

Sunrise isn't for everyone, and that's okay. You'll need to be comfortable with an early alarm, sometimes before 5:00 a.m., depending on the time of year. If you're planning professional hair and makeup, that may mean an even earlier start to your morning.

For some couples, that's all part of the adventure. For others, it sounds more stressful than exciting.

Why Couples Choose Sunset Elopements

Not everyone wants to start their wedding day before dawn, and that's where sunset ceremonies really shine. A sunset elopement gives you the chance to enjoy a slow morning at your cabin, grab breakfast together, explore Gatlinburg, or simply take your time getting ready before heading into the mountains.

For couples who want a more relaxed pace, sunset often feels like the perfect fit.

Pros of a Sunset Elopement

  • A slower, more leisurely morning

  • Plenty of time to get ready without rushing

  • Beautiful golden-hour light

  • A natural transition into dinner or celebrating afterward

  • Gorgeous mountain colors as the day winds down

One of my favorite things about sunset ceremonies is that there's no pressure to race the clock first thing in the morning. Couples can really settle into the day before heading to their ceremony.

Things to Consider

Sunset is one of the most popular times to visit the park, which means you'll usually encounter more visitors than you would at sunrise, especially during the spring, summer, and fall.

Depending on the location you choose, parking lots and overlooks may be busier, so building a little extra time into your timeline is always a good idea.

Which One Is Better for Photos?

It really comes down to the kind of experience you're after. If you love the idea of having the mountains mostly to yourselves, I'd lean toward sunrise. If you'd rather sleep in, enjoy a relaxed morning, and finish the day with sunset views, then an evening ceremony might be the better option.

So, don’t ask yourself which is better for photos, ask which is better for you! I can photograph in any condition and deliver a gorgeous gallery. But you only get one wedding day to experience.

So... Sunrise or Sunset Elopements?

That is for your to decide! But either way, I know your day will be amazing. One of my favorite parts of helping couples plan their Gatlinburg elopement is building a timeline around the experience they want to have, not just the photos they're hoping to take. Whether that means watching the Smokies wake up at sunrise or ending the day with a mountain sunset, we'll create a wedding day that feels relaxed, intentional, and completely your own.
