Tips For Family Photos With A Toddler
Family photos, in general, can feel like a lot of energy to put towards. And family photos with a toddler can feel even more stressful and chaotic. I have to say that as a Gatlinburg family photographer this makes me so sad! Family pictures should be a fun experience that yields beautiful photos that document this time in your life. So, as a photographer but also as a mother to two once little boys, I am sharing my tips for family photos that will make your session less challenging with a toddler!
Choose The Right Time
Every parent knows their kids “happy hours”. This may not be the ideal time for lighting, but trust me when I say I can make it work! If golden hour is more of a “witching hour”, then plan your session for the morning. Or maybe after your nap time. Avoid times when your toddler is tired and hungry.
Keep It Short
I love extended photo sessions just as much as the next Gatlinburg photographer. However, with toddlers, it is best to have a shorter session to accommodate their short attention spans. By sticking to about 30-45 minutes, your children will avoid getting bored or restless while taking photos. In addition, I have my own tricks to keeping your toddlers entertained.
Be Flexible & Play!
Toddlers are so unpredictable, so the key to a fun Gatlinburg family photo session is to be flexible and ready to play! Be ready and willing to adapt your plans and expectations if things don’t go as you envisioned. And while being flexible in your expectations, be sure to play! Incorporating play into your photoshoot will keep your toddler happy and the smiles coming!
Take Breaks
If your toddler starts to get uneasy and restless, it is okay to take a break. Allow your toddler to run around and explore. In a way, let them lead your session and trust me to capture the candid moments. You will be surprised by the darling pictures you will get while taking time to play with toys and eat a few snacks during a short break.
