Fall family pictures are here!! We are back with pumpkin spice, sweaters, and the fall colors of the Smokies! As a Gatlinburg photographer, I know how complicated it can be to get big families together for a photo session, and one of the biggest stressors can be deciding how to match everybody. Let me give you some peace of mind as we explore what works for fall family picture outfits!
Color Palette for Fall Family Picture Outfits
First, don’t pick one color for everybody; pick a palette of colors. Giving your big family a wide range of color options is going to ease the stress of finding a match for everyone.
You can find a lot of example palettes online, but families usually pick fall tones: emerald, tan, orange, maroon, navy, etc. The added bonus of fall colors? They look classy and compliment nearly every skin tone.
Matching vs. Coordinating for Fall Family Picture Outfits
As a Gatlinburg photographer, I wish everyone knew the difference between matching and coordinating. Matching is when everybody wears the exact same thing. Coordinating is when people’s outfits compliment each other, but the outfits are diverse! When given the option, always pick coordinating over matching.
Coordinating outfits has a few benefits. Every member of the family can wear something that’s comfortable and that suits them! Also, it’s more cost effective because nearly everyone will have something that fits the bill already hanging in their closet. Not to mention, for large extended family sessions it makes planning a lot easier!
Mix Patterns and Solids for Fall Family Picture Outfits
Another concern families often express is wanting to know if it’s okay for so-and-so to wear a patterned shirt. Or pants. Or a scarf. From my point of view as the photographer, patterned things are definitely not going to ruin the whole family session!
Actually, it’s better to mix patterns and solids for your family picture outfits. Try to keep a balance of around 70% solid colors, 30% patterns. That way, we get a pleasant focus for the eye, and the patterns don’t look too crowded all together.
To review, for your fall family pictures, pick from a color palette instead of one color. Second, coordinate, don’t match. Lastly, please mix patterns and colors! It will look great.
