Things To Do With Family In Gatlinburg
One of my favorite things about being a Gatlinburg family photographer is how many tourist families I get to capture during their travels in the Smokies. Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains are filled with activities and attractions that will fill your family vacation with memories. It’s no wonder so many people come into the Smokies throughout the year. So, whether you are a local looking for a new fun adventure or a family that is passing through, here are things to do with family in Gatlinburg.
Hikes
You can’t visit the Smoky Mountains without going on a hike! If you are looking for a bigger adventure that challenges your teens or a more simple hike with your toddlers. You will find it in the Smokies! When looking into hikes for your family consider not only the length of the hike, but also the ease of the trails. Some trails are more like paths through the woods, while others feature more rugged landscapes. Here are some of my favorites:
Clingmans Dome
Elkmont Little River Hike
Bullhead Trail
Waterfall Hikes
While on your hike, visit a waterfall! These hikes are perfect for the hot summer months and have a promising pool at the end. I recommend these hikes to those with older kids who don’t mind the trek. However, younger children who love to be outside and have endurance can easily tag along too!
Grotto Falls
Rainbow Falls
Abram’s Falls
Ozone Falls
Laurel Falls
Scenic Drives
A scenic drive is a perfect activity to do during toddlers' naps or at the end of the day as your children are dozing off. Take it slow and drive through the mountains while diving into conversation, listening to your favorite music or simply enjoying the quiet. This is something you can also enjoy with grandparents who may not have been able to participate in a hike.
The Unconventional
Now that you have my recommendations for the classic Smoky Mountain adventures, let’s dive into some that you may not even know exist! These are activities that can mix up your days, and add a bit more thrill to your vacation.
For Thrill Seekers
Outdoor Gravity Park
This is the only zorbing park in the USA that is open year round, so you have to take advantage of it while in Gatlinburg! Dive into an 11 foot giant inflatable ball and roll down our 1000 ft hill with 3 different tracks to choose from. Cold water in the summer, 90 degree warm water in the winter. You really can’t beat it!
Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster & Alpine Mountain Coaster
Both of these rollercoasters are outstanding and will fill your day with thrill, giggles, and countless memories. It is a local favorite that you should check out for yourself!
Goliath Zipline Tour
150-acre park features multiple zip line courses including the highest, fastest and the longest lines in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Zip up to 60 mph, over 1/2 mile long and over 500ft high!
Anakeesta Mountaintop Adventure Park
Mountain coasters, dining and shopping. Anakeesta really does have it all! And the excitement continues through the night. So, be sure to add on the Astra Lumina to have an enchanting night walk among the stars.
The Island in Pigeon Forge
From escape rooms and carnival rides, to ropes courses and water fun. Your family, no matter the ages, will love this adventure!
Taking Things Slow
Here are a few things to do with family in Gatlinburg that are at a slower pace but still equally enjoyable! I recommend mixing in a few slow days with thrilling adventures. This will help avoid burnout, especially with kids.
