Gatlinburg Photographer Tips For Family Cabin Photos

Did you know Gatlinburg is the top travel destination in the U.S.? (TripAdviser, 2021). And with that I get to see a lot of family reunions throughout the year at the many cabin retreats in the area. I love capturing family portraits and the candid moments in between as a Gatlinburg photographer! However, the cabin you book will make a big difference in how your images turn out. So, before you book your family cabin, here are a few things to look for to make your family cabin photos the best possible!

A Break In The Woods

Many Gatlinburg cabins are tucked into the woods for a cozy, secluded atmosphere. These locations often make the cabin not very photo-friendly, as there is a lack of natural light. Try to find a family cabin that offers a bit more sunlight with a break in the woods. This could be around the front of the cabin, or a clearing that was made for parking.

Landscaping

In addition to looking for a cabin with natural light, consider the landscaping. If you have a cabin that is off the beaten path, then you may have lush woods and an overgrown garden that will add whimsy to your family photos. However, if your cabin is in a more developed area your landscaping will be more pristine. Your cabin’s landscaping will create the atmosphere and backdrop for your images!

Cabin Features

A big part of family cabin photos is the cabin itself! Finding a cabin with a wide deck and a pretty front porch is ideal. Often times decks can be too narrow, so I am not able to get far back enough for a big group photo. And if the deck is covered, then shadows can be cast of your families faces. I can always brighten faces, but then we will loose the backlit mountain view. So if you want a mountain view, we will have to get off the porch and into the lawn!

Smoky Mountain View

The best part of being a Gatlinburg photographer are the views of the Smoky Mountains! When looking for a family cabin in Gatlinburg I urge you to find one with a great view of the Smokies. This will enhance every image as it is such a grand backdrop for family photos. It will also remind you of your families time in the National Park as you look back on these pictures for years to come!
