Gatlinburg Photographers Winter Family Pictures

Thinking about getting your winter family pictures? Gatlinburg photographers will almost always recommend a family shoot in the wintertime, but why? There are a ton of benefits to planning a session in the winter, especially here in the Smoky Mountains.

Easy to Schedule

For me, wintertime is just so much easier to plan and get on the calendar. January and February just seem easier to schedule. There are fewer sports games to attend, fewer holiday gatherings, fewer trips. Especially if you’re wanting to bring extended families together, you will find that it’s easier to get a date in the winter season! Here in Gatlinburg, we’ll also find less traffic and fewer tourists around the Smokies, which, in my opinion, makes it easier to get the photos you want.

Cool Weather Photos

Another perk of winter family pictures? The weather is cool! It can be especially nice not to worry about sweating through clothes or smudging makeup, like we so often do during summer sessions. This year, the weather in December was perfect. Plus, winter often affords good cloud coverage, which creates better lighting for Gatlinburg photographers like me.

Best Outfits for Winter Family Pictures

So what to wear when you head out for your session? Everyone looks great in a winter color palette. Jewel tones, including deep red, maroon, teal, and green look great in winter photos. Also consider style! Flannel is always a good choice for fall and winter family pictures. Boots, sweaters, and vests are also popular choices, and they look great in photos too.

Location for Winter Family Pictures

No matter the season, it’s always smart to plan a location where kids can run, play, and explore during the session. For this one, we just headed a bit off the road in the Smokies. The boys had a ton of fun playing in the leaves and trees while we did couple’s poses. If you need more advice on a good location for winter pictures, I’d love to share some suggestions.

Winter really is one of the best seasons for Gatlinburg photographers! Did I convince you yet? When you plan your winter family pictures, don’t hesitate to drop me a line. I’d love to work with your family.
