Summer Family Photo Outfits

Are you loving summer as much as I am? With the bright greenery and warm hues of the sun, summer bookings are so much fun for photographers in Gatlinburg! I recently met up with the Daffan family for a fresh family photoshoot in the Smoky Mountains. Let me share some of their best shots, and along the way I’ll give you some tips on how you can also achieve this look with your own summer family photo outfits! 

The Daffans in the Smokies

With school getting out and schedules loosening up, it’s a great time to get together for your annual family photos. Mom Shanee mentioned that it’s been hard getting all five in the family together, so the real goal of the shoot was a fresh, updated photo with everybody. 

We headed back to Foothills Parkway Scenic Drive because the Daffans are all about adventurous poses. It must have been my lucky day as a Gatlinburg photographer, because we got an overcast sky that made for great lighting.

The Daffans picked the best summer family photo outfits. They were both comfortable and easy to move in, while also coordinating so well! Are you looking to take your own family photos? I’ll share with you a few tips for picking the best look before your next family photoshoot. 

Pick the Right Colors for the Location 

Do you have a location in mind for your next family session? Shanee loves the mountain backdrop—she told me it’s her “must have” shot! When you know the location you’re shooting at, pick colors that compliment the location, but still make your family stand out.

For example, here at this location, we would have been sunk if the Daffans all decided to wear dark greens. They would have blended in to all those trees immediately! Luckily, the whites, tans, and light blues of the Daffan outfits were calm and cool, and definitely complimentary. But, white and tan are bright enough that we can still easily follow their forms in every picture.

Pick a Summer Style 

The freshness of summer means that we can bring back all the summer styles for your summer family photo outfits. Have your pick of breezy khaki, sundresses, shorts, and sandals! Keeping it casual, yet put together, is the best way for your personalities to shine through. As you will be able to move comfortably and feel more in your element.

In addition, lean towards pastel colors for a sunshine-y vibe. To keep cool in the heat, stick to breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. 

Clothes with Movement for Kids

My clients often tell me that they love my mix of traditionally posed and candid shots. But, because I like natural interaction photos more than other photographers in Gatlinburg, I always suggest that my clients wear clothes they can actually move in!

This tip is so important for kids. You’ll see a lot more natural smiles from your children if they feel comfortable to run, jump, and simply be themselves.
